Ow.

Lately the transition from chaturanga dandasana to upward dog has been absolutely killing my left shoulder. I think I'm doing the poses properly, and no teachers have corrected me, so I don't know what's going wrong. One of my teachers suggested spreading my hands farther apart on the mat, but that doesn't seem to help much.

Does this happen to anyone else? What do you do to stop it from happening? Because my shoulder is now starting to hurt even when I'm not doing yoga...

ahhh- stop stop stop!!!

I usually do chaturanga followed by cobra for the first half of sun saluts- to protect my back muscles mainly, but it would also go easier on your shoulder.

hmm. Maybe see a Physiotherapist?

Hey new to your blog and just wanted to say hi.

Not too sure what to say about your shoulder, I really hurt my back a few months out when my teacher pushed my leg further than it wanted to go - don't go to his class anymore!

I just stopped for two weeks and went swimming instead. Gave me time to chill and reflect on what I wanted out of yoga.

Anyway I am blabbering rubbish

Cheers

Hmmm...I know Kira Ryder has a new sequence on her site Lulubandhas that explores shoulders and safe alignment in various poses. Try this link to the video series:

Also, Doug Keller has a GREAT article on the anatomy of the shoulder, healing and protecting (where Kira got a lot of her info). Try this one:

And this one:

I have found them all really helpful!

Love your blog...now that I've found you, I'll post more often.

Love.

Eco-Yogini - the physiotherapist might be a good idea actually, but sadly changing jobs means that I currently have no health plan. When I broke my leg I got physio for free at the hospital where I had my surgery, but other than that I think they can be quite expensive! I think I've figured it out, though - after playing around a bit, I've discovered that my shoulder doesn't bother me if I put my hands farther forward in plank. Maybe they were too far back to begin with?

Healing Hands - thanks for the comment! I can totally understand why you would stop taking that teacher's class. I've never had a teacher who tried to push my body a way it didn't want to go, but I've definitely hear horror stories!

Tina - Thanks for the articles! They were actually really helpful. I haven't had the chance to check out the video yet, but I'm looking forward to it!
